Fremington to Instow via the Tarka Trail

Fremington to Instow via the Tarka Trail. Distance from Fremington Quay, 6.12km

Don't feel like driving? You can take this walk from our house.  There are two options for walking to Instow―follow the Tarka Trail, which you pick up at Fremington Quay. This is a paved, easy way, perfect for walking or  cycling. The Trail follows an old railway line, passes through woods and meadows, and gives some views of the River Taw at certain places.

Or you can take the coastal path―I'll cover that in the next post.

The Trail actually passes Instow and only joins the village at the far end. So if you want to enjoy a lovely stroll along the beach, leave the Trail as you approach Instow.

Once arriving at beautiful Instow, you will probably feel like some refreshments.  There are several great options.

THE GLORIOUS OYSTER  Otherwise known as the Oyster Shack. Outdoor seating only in a great location. Stop here for fabulous home-made food and smoothies, and excellent seafood snacks. And of course, oysters!

PUB RESTAURANTS  For great views and good hearty food, choose either the Instow Arms or The Boat House. Very popular, so advisable to book ahead in high season.

The Wayfarer Inn is on a side street. What it lacks in views, it more than makes up for in ambience and a warm friendly atmosphere.

The Quay Inn is at the far end of the village, coming from Fremington.  Not much outdoor seating, but a cosy, friendly pub with some good food.

If you just want to sit on the beach with a coffee, try St. John's Delicatessen. Watch out, you may find yourself tempted by their delicious bakery goods!

Now it's time to get back to our house. If you are feeling energetic, you can just walk back.  Or walk up to the main road where there are buses running to Fremington every 15 minutes. There are also local taxis.
