The Picturesque Village of Appledore

The picturesque quayside village of Appledore is situated on the West side of the estuary where the Taw and Torridge Rivers meet. It's only 8 miles from our house. Charles Kingsley referred to Appledore as "the little white fishing village."

Magnificent views of the Estuary are only part of it's charm. Wander back into the quaint, narrow lanes where there are colourful fishermen's cottages, and other historic houses. You will also find art galleries, craft shops and other interesting independent shops.

In summer, colourful arrangements of flowers add to the beauty of the waterfront.  There are several cafes on the Quay with outdoor seating to enjoy the view and watch the world saunter by.

Also in summer is a ferry to take you to Instow, clearly visible on the other side of the estuary. Throughout the summer the Appledore Silver Band performs weekly on the Quay if the weather allows.

Market Street Cafe is a firm favourite for brunch or lunch. (You can see the sign for the café in the photo above.) When the weather is fine, sit outside in the cafe garden to enjoy the great homemade food and the flower displays.

You can also book a family leisure trip up the River Torridge, or a fishing trip with all supplies provided. You can even charter  a 31 foot skippered yacht, with a skipper, just for yourselves, for trips short or long.  Please visit Appledore Things To Do for a full list of all the interesting activities that are available in this one small village.
