Watermouth Cove —A Charming Hidden Gem
Watermouth Cove is a delightful, rocky inlet shielded by the natural breakwater of Sexton's Burrows, and it offers charming scenic views. It is situated halfway between the village of Combe Martin, known as the Gateway to Exmoor, and Ilfracombe. It's seclude waters offer a peaceful anchorage for small boats and yachts. Parking is available near the waterfront.
If you like hiking, the South West Coast Path crosses Watermouth Harbour and on up to Widmouth Head, a favourite spot, with a strategically placed bench for viewing porpoises, dolphins and seals when the tide is right. As with many parts of the South West Coast Path, be prepared for some steep climbs.
A visit to the Watermouth Cove is not complete without stopping for an ice-cream, snack or hot drink at the quaint Tea Cup Cafe, which is actually a converted boat. There's no indoor seating, but a lovely outdoor terrace to sit and contemplate the view. Or just sit on the sea wall, as many do.
Behind the Cove, and looming above it, is Watermouth Castle, an Edwardian castle which has been transformed into a theme park, with fun entertainment for the whole family.
So much to enjoy in this one tiny hamlet!
